How the Sod Calculator Turns Yard Size Into Rolls
A sod calculator takes the lawn area, removes beds and patios, adds a waste allowance, and divides by the area of one roll or slab. The same order area divided by your farm's pallet size gives the pallet count.
A sod calculator always rounds pieces up, because a supplier cannot sell part of a roll. Keep the exact pallet figure in view too, since many farms only sell full pallets and the gap is your spare sod.
Here N is the number of rolls or slabs, Anet is the lawn area after skipped areas and any slope factor, w is the waste allowance in percent, and a is the area of one piece in square feet.
P is the exact pallet count and C is the square feet of sod on one pallet. Round P up when your farm sells whole pallets only.
How do I calculate how much sod I need?
Run a 60 × 40 ft backyard through the sod calculator. The area is 2,400 sq ft. With 10% waste, you need 2,640 sq ft of sod, which is 264 standard rolls of 10 sq ft each.
On 450 sq ft pallets, 2,640 ÷ 450 = 5.87 pallets, so the order is 6 pallets. Those 6 pallets deliver 2,700 sq ft, which leaves 60 sq ft spare for patching edges later.
Measuring a Yard for the Sod Calculator

Triangle height is measured square to the base. Multiplying two short sides and halving them only works on a right triangle. On any other triangle, that shortcut overstates or understates the area.
How do I calculate square footage for an odd-shaped yard?
Split the yard into rectangles and add them. An L-shaped lawn of 40 × 30 ft plus 25 × 18 ft totals 1,650 sq ft. Subtract a 10 ft round flower bed (79 sq ft) and the net lawn is 1,571 sq ft.

How Many Square Feet Is a Piece of Sod?
A standard roll of sod covers 10 sq ft. It comes as 24 × 60 in or 18 × 80 in. Mini rolls cover 5 sq ft, and southern slabs measure 16 × 24 in, which is 2.67 sq ft each.

Big-roll sod is a different product. UT Extension publication W160-C describes rolls 24, 30 or 48 inches wide and up to 100 feet long, laid by machine on open sites. The sod calculator handles them as a custom piece size, up to 200 ft long.
How Much Sod Is on a Pallet?
A pallet of sod usually holds 400 to 500 sq ft, and northern roll pallets can reach 700 sq ft. A 450 sq ft pallet is 50 square yards, which is the slab pallet size UT Extension describes.
Ask your farm for its exact pallet size before you trust any sod calculator pallet count. A 2,640 sq ft order is 5.87 pallets at 450 sq ft but 5.28 pallets at 500 sq ft. That is 6 whole pallets either way, but larger yards cross into a different pallet count.
Whole pallets or pallets plus loose rolls?
The last whole pallet is often mostly spare. A 1,250 sq ft lawn with 10% waste needs 1,375 sq ft. Four whole 450 sq ft pallets deliver 1,800 sq ft, which leaves 425 sq ft unused.
Buying 3 pallets plus 3 loose rolls delivers 1,380 sq ft instead. At $0.55 per sq ft, that saves $231 on sod alone, if your supplier sells loose pieces.

How much sod per acre?
One acre is 43,560 sq ft, or 4,840 square yards. With 10% waste, it takes about 47,900 sq ft of sod, which is 107 pallets of 450 sq ft or 96 pallets of 500 sq ft.
At that scale, a 5% allowance in the sod calculator on an open field saves about 2,180 sq ft compared with 10%. Big-roll sod laid by machine is also common on sites this size, so ask the farm for its big-roll coverage.
Sod Calculator for Sloped Yards and Waste
Add 5% for a simple rectangle and about 10% for curved beds, trees and walkways. Sod Solutions advises ordering 5 to 10% extra to cover cuts and measuring errors.
A slope has more surface than its flat plan shows. A tape stretched level across a bank, or a map reading, measures the plan. The ground itself is longer, so the sod calculator multiplies the flat area by a slope factor.
Aplan is the area measured flat, and g is the grade as rise over run. A 3:1 bank rises 1 ft in 3 ft, so g = 0.333 and the factor is 1.054, or 5.4% more sod.

The roll counts include 10% waste. A 3:1 bank, a 33.3% grade and an 18.4° slope are the same slope, so any of the three gives 279 rolls on a 60 × 40 ft lawn.
Count the slope only once. If you measured down the bank with the tape lying on the ground, that length is already the true surface. Set the slope to 0 in that case, or the extra gets added twice.
The slope factor applies to the whole lawn you enter. For a flat yard with one steep bank, run the bank as its own estimate and add the two orders, so the flat part is not inflated.
Sod Calculator Cost per Square Foot
Sod cost is the area you receive times the price per square foot, plus delivery. You pay for the delivered area, not the net lawn, so whole-pallet orders cost more than the waste-adjusted area suggests.
Adelivered is the sod you receive in sq ft, p is the price per sq ft, and D is the delivery fee. For a pro install, add the labor rate times the net lawn area.
Prices quoted per square yard divide by 9, and per-pallet prices divide by the pallet's square feet. A $247.50 pallet of 450 sq ft is $0.55 per sq ft. A sod calculator cost comparison between two farms works only on price per sq ft, because their pallet sizes differ.
How much does 10x10 sod cost?
A 10 × 10 ft patch needs 110 sq ft of sod with 10% waste, which is 11 rolls. At $0.55 per sq ft bought by the roll, the sod is $60.50 before delivery or pickup.
If the supplier sells whole pallets only, the same patch costs a full 450 sq ft pallet, or $247.50 at that price. Add a $150 delivery fee and the total is $397.50, more than six times the loose-roll price.

How Much Does a Pallet of Sod Weigh?
A 450 sq ft pallet weighs about 2,000 lb. Mississippi State University Extension puts it at up to a ton, and UT Extension says a slab pallet weighs 2,000 lb or more.
Wet sod is heavier. Sod Solutions lists pallets at 1,500 to 3,000 lb and notes that weight can rise 50% when wet. At 2,000 lb dry, a soaked pallet can reach about 3,000 lb.
In the sod calculator, the 6-pallet order for a 2,400 sq ft lawn weighs about 12,000 lb, or 6 tons. Soaked, it nears 18,000 lb. Each 10 sq ft roll weighs about 44 lb, so one person moving 264 rolls carries almost 6 tons by hand.
UT Extension notes tall fescue slabs can carry more than ⅝ inch of soil, while bermudagrass, zoysia and centipedegrass often ship with ½ inch or less. That makes fescue pallets heavier per square foot.

Topsoil under new turf follows the same lawn area the sod calculator for turf already uses. Volume in cubic yards is the lawn area times the depth in feet, divided by 27. Each inch over 1,000 sq ft takes 3.09 cubic yards.

UT Extension advises watering new sod within a few hours of laying, then a light ⅛ to ¼ inch daily for several weeks. That is about 78 to 156 gallons per 1,000 sq ft each day, best applied in early morning.
As roots grow down, switch to about ½ inch every two to three days, roughly 312 gallons per 1,000 sq ft. For a 2,400 sq ft lawn, the sod calculator puts the early daily dose at 187 to 374 gallons.

Sod splits into warm-season and cool-season grasses. Warm-season bermudagrass, zoysia, St. Augustine and centipedegrass are mostly sold as slabs in the South. Cool-season tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are mostly sold as rolls in the North.

Cut sod should be laid within 24 to 48 hours of harvest, as UT Extension advises. The center of a stacked pallet can heat past 120°F, and shaded pieces in the middle often die first.
Schedule delivery for the day you lay it, and split a large order into two deliveries if the crew cannot lay it all in one day.
Start along a straight edge, stagger the seams like bricks, butt the edges tight without stretching or overlapping, and keep a hose running while the rest goes down.
