How Vapor Barrier Installation Cost Is Calculated

A vapor barrier installation covers two connected surfaces, not one flat area: the horizontal floor and the vertical foundation wall where the barrier turns up and gets sealed or taped at the top. The calculator adds both together, then layers on overlap for seams and separate rates for material and labor.

Floor area, from the length $L$ and width $W$ of the space:

Wall area, from the perimeter and the height $h$ of foundation wall the barrier covers going up from the floor:

$$P = 2(L + W)$$

$$A_{wall} = P \times h$$

Net area is the actual square footage the barrier has to physically cover before any waste is added:

Gross area is what you actually need to buy. The overlap percentage $o$ (capped at 50%) accounts for seams where sheets lap over one another:

What the Result Means

The headline number is total installed cost: material plus labor, all in. The four supporting figures break down where that number comes from. Gross area is what you actually purchase; net area and overlap area underneath it show how much of that purchase is coverage versus how much is seam waste.

Material cost is charged against the gross (overlap-inclusive) area because that’s the square footage you’re buying off the roll. Labor cost is charged against the net area only, since an installer isn’t paid twice to install the same square foot of barrier where two sheets overlap. That split means the labor line and material line aren’t proportional to each other, and a higher overlap percentage inflates material cost without touching labor cost at all.

Cost per square foot of floor footprint is total installed cost divided by floor area alone, not by the total surface covered. It will always read higher than either rate you entered on its own, because it’s spreading wall-coverage cost and overlap waste across just the floor’s square footage. Two projects with identical floor dimensions but different wall heights will show very different cost-per-square-foot figures even at the same material and labor rates.

Wall height accepts zero. That covers a slab-on-grade scenario where the barrier only needs to run under the floor with no foundation wall to wrap up and seal — in that case wall area, wall labor cost, and the wall-area subtotal all drop out and the estimate becomes floor-only.

What Changes the Result

Wall height is the input with the most leverage on the total, because wall area scales with perimeter, not floor area. A tall crawl space wall can add more square footage to cover than the floor itself, even on a small footprint, since perimeter grows linearly with length and width while floor area grows with their product.

Overlap percentage is capped at 50% in the calculator, reflecting a practical ceiling on how much extra material a seam allowance should realistically add. Since overlap only affects the material line and not labor, its impact on total cost is smaller for labor-heavy jobs than for material-heavy ones.

The gap between material rate and labor rate matters more than either number alone. Because material is priced on gross area and labor on net area, a job with a high overlap percentage and a high material rate will see material cost pull ahead of labor cost, while a job with a low overlap and high labor rate will see the opposite.
