How Sod Coverage Is Calculated
The calculator starts with the net area of the lawn you’re sodding, then adds a waste margin and converts the result into whole rolls, whole pallets, and a total cost.
Net area is simply length times width:

A waste percentage is applied on top of that net area to cover cutting losses around curves, edges, and obstacles:

Each roll of sod covers a fixed area, calculated from the roll’s own length and width. Dividing the target area by that roll area gives the raw roll count, which is then rounded up, since a partial roll still has to be purchased whole:

Sod is sold by the pallet, not the individual roll, so the roll count is converted into a pallet order by dividing by the number of rolls per pallet and rounding up again:

Because pallets are ordered whole, you almost always end up with more rolls delivered than the target actually requires. That surplus is:

$$\text{Surplus Rolls} = \text{Supplied Rolls} – \text{Total Rolls}$$
Total cost is the number of pallets multiplied by the price per pallet, then broken back down into a cost per roll and a cost per unit of net lawn area so you can compare quotes:

Worked Example
Take a 50 ft by 40 ft lawn, sodded with rolls measuring 5 ft by 2 ft, at a 10% waste allowance, with 50 rolls per pallet and a pallet price of $350.
Net area comes first: $50 \times 40 = 2{,}000$ sq ft. At 10% waste, that adds $2{,}000 \times 0.10 = 200$ sq ft, bringing the target area to $2{,}000 + 200 = 2{,}200$ sq ft.
Each roll covers $5 \times 2 = 10$ sq ft, so the raw roll count is $2{,}200 \div 10 = 220$ rolls. That divides evenly, so the total stays at 220 rolls with no rounding needed.
At 50 rolls per pallet, $220 \div 50 = 4.4$, which rounds up to 5 pallets. Five pallets supply $5 \times 50 = 250$ rolls, which is 30 rolls more than the 220 actually required.
At $350 per pallet, the total cost is $$5 \times \$350 = \$1{,}750$$. That works out to $$\$1{,}750 \div 250 = \$7.00$$ per supplied roll, or $$\$1{,}750 \div 2{,}000 = \$0.875$$ per square foot of actual lawn covered.

What the Result Means
The roll and pallet counts are always rounded up, never down, because sod can’t be bought in fractional rolls or fractional pallets. That means the “supplied rolls” figure will almost always exceed the “total rolls” figure, and the gap between them is the surplus you’re paying for but not strictly required to cover.
A small surplus, a few rolls left over on a job that needed several pallets, is normal and not a sign of over-ordering. A large surplus, most commonly seen on small lawns that still only need a fraction of one pallet, means the last pallet is doing a lot of unused work; there’s no way around this since suppliers sell by the pallet.
Cost per supplied roll and cost per net square foot are the two figures worth comparing across quotes from different suppliers, since pallet price alone doesn’t account for differences in rolls per pallet or roll size.
What Changes the Result
Waste percentage has a direct, linear effect on the target area and therefore on roll count: moving from 10% to 20% waste on the same lawn adds another 10% of net area to the target, which can be enough to push the roll count into a whole extra pallet. The calculator accepts any waste value from 0% to 50%.
Roll dimensions set the roll area, which is the denominator in the roll-count formula, so smaller rolls always mean more rolls needed for the same target area, even though the total square footage of sod purchased stays the same.
Rolls per pallet controls how much surplus you end up with. A lower rolls-per-pallet count means each pallet covers less ground, so the rounding-up step to the next whole pallet happens more often and produces a bigger relative surplus.
Switching the unit toggle between feet and meters converts any values already entered in the length, width, roll length, and roll width fields using a factor of 0.3048 meters per foot, and relabels the area outputs as square meters instead of square feet. It doesn’t change the underlying math, only the units it’s expressed in.
