Flooring, Wall & Finish Calculators
Once the framing is done, Flooring, Wall & Finish Calculators take over. Count tile, flooring boxes, drywall sheets, and paint gallons. Plan siding, shiplap, wainscoting, and trim, then price carpet, laminate, and marble installs.
Using Flooring, Wall & Finish Calculators
Finish work is where material orders get tight. Tile comes in boxes. Drywall comes in sheets. Paint comes in gallons. Flooring, Wall & Finish Calculators turn room sizes into those whole units, with waste added.
This page follows a room from the floor up. Each stop names the tools that fit and the numbers behind them.
Under the Floor
The Subfloor Calculator counts sheets for the structural layer. A standard 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. Divide the floor area by 32, then add waste for cuts.
The Vapor Barrier Cost Calculator prices the moisture layer under slabs and floors. For concrete floors, the IRC calls for a 6-mil polyethylene or approved vapor retarder in most cases. Overlap the seams, so order more than the bare floor area.
The Adhesive Coverage Calculator estimates glue for glue-down floors and wall panels. The Deck Mud Calculator estimates the mortar bed used under shower pans and some tile floors.
The Finished Floor
The Flooring Calculator handles plank and sheet floors by the box. The Tile Calculator counts tiles and boxes. The Carpet Calculator finds carpet area and cost. The Stair Carpet Calculator finds the length needed to cover a staircase. The Epoxy Calculator estimates resin for floor coatings.
Boxes and Waste
Flooring is sold by the box, so round up after adding waste.
$$\text{Boxes} = \frac{\text{Area} \times (1 + \text{Waste})}{\text{Box coverage}}$$
Take a 12 × 14 ft room, which is 168 sq ft. With 10% waste, you need about 185 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box, that is 9.24 boxes. Buy 10.
| Layout | Common waste allowance |
|---|---|
| Straight lay, simple room | About 10% |
| Diagonal or herringbone | About 15% or more |
| Many corners or closets | Add more |
Keep a spare box after the job. Matching dye lots later can be hard.
Carpet and Stairs
Broadloom carpet is often sold in 12 ft widths. Rooms wider than the roll need a seam, and seams add waste. Carpet is priced by the square yard or square foot, so check which unit a quote uses.
For stairs, each step needs one tread plus one riser, plus the wrap over the nosing. Multiply that length by the number of steps.
Epoxy Coatings
Epoxy coverage depends on thickness. One gallon spread over 100 sq ft makes a film about 16 mils thick. Thicker coats cover less area. Follow the maker’s spread rate for your product.
The Walls
The Wall Square Footage Calculator finds net wall area. Multiply the room perimeter by the wall height, then subtract doors and windows.
Drywall
The Drywall Calculator counts sheets, screws, and joint compound. A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. A 4 × 12 sheet covers 48 sq ft.
A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 sq ft of wall. Add the 144 sq ft ceiling for 528 sq ft. That is 11 sheets of 4 × 12 before waste. Many hangers skip subtracting small openings, since cutouts rarely save a full sheet.
Paint
The Paint Calculator turns wall area and coats into gallons. Sherwin-Williams puts typical coverage at about 350–400 sq ft per gallon. Textured or unprimed walls take more.
$$\text{Gallons} = \frac{\text{Net wall area} \times \text{Coats}}{\text{Coverage per gallon}}$$
For the same 12 × 12 room, subtract a 21 sq ft door and a 15 sq ft window. That leaves 348 sq ft. Two coats at 350 sq ft per gallon need about 2 gallons.
Wallpaper and Paneling
The Wallpaper Calculator finds how many rolls a room needs. Roll size and pattern repeat vary by product, so use the numbers on the label. Large repeats waste more paper.
The Shiplap Calculator, Wainscoting Calculator, and Board Coverage Calculator count boards and panels. Use each board’s exposed face, not its nominal width. Overlapping edges hide part of every board.
Openings and Glass
The Window Area Calculator finds window and glass area. The Window To Wall Ratio Calculator divides window area by gross wall area. Commercial energy codes limit this ratio on their prescriptive paths, so check the edition your project uses.
The Open Area Percentage Calculator finds how much of a perforated panel is open. For round holes on a 60° staggered pattern, a standard formula applies.
$$\text{Open area \%} = 90.69 \times \left(\frac{D}{C}\right)^2$$
D is the hole diameter and C is the center spacing. Holes of 1/8 in on 3/16 in centers give about 40% open area.
Trim and Sealing
The Baseboard Trim Calculator finds linear feet and piece count. Measure the room perimeter and subtract door openings. Add extra for miter cuts at each corner.
The Sealant Calculator finds how many caulk tubes a job needs. A 10.1 oz cartridge holds about 18.2 cubic inches. A 1/4 × 1/4 in joint uses 0.0625 sq in per inch of length. One tube fills about 24 ft of that joint before waste.
The Exterior
The Siding Calculator and Vinyl Siding Calculator find siding in squares. One square covers 100 sq ft. Measure each wall, add gable triangles, and subtract large openings.
The Fire Glass Calculator finds how much glass fills a fire pit or fireplace. It uses the burner area and fill depth.
Installed Cost
The Carpet Installation Cost Calculator, Laminate Flooring Installation Cost Calculator, and Marble Flooring Cost Calculator add labor to material. Prices vary widely by region and product. Enter local quotes for the most useful result.
Compare quotes on the same basis. Some include removal, underlayment, and trim. Others list them separately.
Common Mistakes
Rounding before adding waste. Add waste to the area first, then round up to full boxes or sheets.
Forgetting closets. Measure every space that gets the same finish.
Using nominal board widths. Coverage comes from the exposed face.
Counting one coat of paint. Most color changes need two.
FAQs
How much area does a gallon of paint cover?
About 350–400 sq ft on smooth, primed walls, per Sherwin-Williams. Textured surfaces cover less.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
About 10% for a straight layout. Diagonal and herringbone patterns often need 15% or more.
How many drywall sheets for a 12 × 12 room?
With 8 ft walls and a ceiling, about 11 sheets of 4 × 12 before waste. Add a sheet or two for cuts.
What is a square of siding?
One square covers 100 sq ft of wall.
How far does a tube of caulk go?
A 10.1 oz tube fills about 24 ft of a 1/4 × 1/4 in joint. Wider or deeper joints use more.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
For paint, siding, and wallpaper, yes. For drywall, many installers skip small openings because cutouts rarely save a full sheet.
